A time of transition at Some Other Solutions

We are going through a period of transition at Some Other Solutions as our Executive Director, Jason King, moves on at the end of July.

Transitions are an important part of life. Some are sudden, tragic and overwhelming, like the loss of a loved one. Other life transitions are more predictable. Some are simply the result of a step in a new direction.

What we’ve learned over the last two years is that Some Other Solutions can pivot. We can adjust and we do just that. We work together to provide support for both our teams and our community no matter the circumstance.

We look forward to continuing to be a leader in the community, providing mental health and wellness support for every individual and family who needs it. Whether you’re going through your own transition or are struggling with depression, grief and loss or trauma - we are here for you.

The impact of depression on youth and adults

Depression. It’s a word thrown around a lot, but it can be hard to define and pin down. At its core, depression is defined as a persistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest. 

It can affect how someone feels, thinks and behaves and can result in many different emotional and physical problems. 

According to Statistics Canada, major depression affects about 5.4 percent of Canadians.

Counselling before a crisis

What happens when you haven’t been to the dentist in years? We are far from dental experts, but there’s a good possibility you’ll have a collection of cavities and require multiple rounds of treatment to get your teeth back in good shape. Root canal, anyone? So instead, we go to the dentist regularly, once or twice a year. We brush our teeth and floss (sometimes), and try to avoid too much sugary food that can damage our enamel. 

Going to the dentist is part of preventative health and wellness. It’s also why we go to the doctor for regular checkups or have our eyes examined. By staying on top of our personal health and wellness, we can prevent and stay on top of any bumps in the road.

So why is it so different for counselling?

The power of mentorship

We believe that a positive adult role-model is vital to the healthy progression of every child. Our mentoring program builds resilient children and youth by building trust, empowering young individuals, improving self-worth, communication skills and coping skills.

Finding hope without the solution to everything

Hope can sometimes feel hard to find. It can feel like a figment of our imagination and tricky to grasp. It’s a concept, not a tangible item. For many, that’s where the struggle is.
