Stepping up to support mental health

There’s no question we live in a tight-knit community. We have faced monumental struggles, but together we rise up. When a friend, neighbour or loved one needs help, together we gather to support.

It’s all circled around the entire foundation of what we do at Some Other Solutions: “To be confident through chaos and to help you find the strength within to not only be empowered yourself, but to spread that feeling to others at the same time.”

Those feelings of community and empowerment came through in full force this month as we watched individuals and groups come together to donate thousands of dollars in support of mental health in Wood Buffalo.

Board Chair and Principal at Fort McMurray Composite High School Dan Tulk challenged his students to raise $10,000 in support of mental health research and support. In exchange he would shave his head.

And everyone stepped up. From students to corporate partners, families and individuals, the final tally was more than $13,000!

Some Other Solutions was proud to receive $6,500 of that total. Those funds will directly contribute to the programming and mental health support we can offer in the community.

“It was an exciting day seeing community partners/businesses join together raising funds for our communities youth,” says Jason King, Executive Director of SOS. “The atmosphere was electric with students and teachers.”

Mindful Parenting starts January 24

Parenting is hard, but there is a way to do it with mindful intentions.

Through this six session series we will cover:

• How to mindfully experience your child

• Self care strategies and reconnecting with our body

• Responding vs reacting

• Parenting patterns and schemas

• Cultivating compassion and setting limits

• A mindful path through parenting

The sessions are led by a certified mindful instructor and certified Canadian counsellor.

“Activate Mentorship” in January

We believe that a positive adult role-model is vital to the healthy progression of every child.

Our mentoring program builds resilient children and youth by building trust, empowering young individuals, improving self-worth, communication skills and coping skills. Our mentoring program is wide spread through Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo as a preventative, intervention and resiliency based support for all.

January is Mentor Month in Canada and SOS will be sharing insights, perspectives and more throughout the month on our social media channels. Follow us along as we Activate Mentorship in 2023!
