A commitment to leading the mental health movement in Wood Buffalo

Over the last six weeks, I’ve had the privilege of spending even more time out in our community and having in-depth conversations about mental health support. What has become extremely clear is the need to elevate the mental health conversations in our multi-cultural communities. They are feeling a lack of support and I want that to change.

I’m committed to continuing those conversations and exploring ways that Some Other Solutions can be even more accessible and barrier free for those of all cultures and backgrounds.

One way we are continuing to improve access to mental health support is through our pro bono counselling program. You’ll also see a mix of paid and free programs from our health and wellness and child and youth departments for this fall as we work to welcome everyone into a safe, supportive circle. More information on these programs is below.

Supporting groups within the community is a priority for SOS and we are pleased to be able to offer a range of programs for children, youth and parents.

Introduction to Mindful Parenting is a free, two-part workshop that helps tackle stress related to parenting. Part one takes place Oct. 27.

Child and Youth programs also kick off next week, including Mindful Minds, Junior Mentors and Heart of the Matter. These programs can support young people between 7 and 18 years old.

Currently all multi-week programs at SOS are being offered virtually for the health and safety of our community.

Counselling demand increases significantly

Counselling at Some Other Solutions is continuing to grow and expand as more and more people in our community are reaching out to connect and engage with a trusted support system.

From Sept. 2020 to Sept. 2021, the number of counselling clients has doubled with the majority of adults struggling with interpersonal issues, separation/divorce, anxiety, and grief and loss.

The SOS health and wellness team provides clinical services through many options to allow everyone to pick a method that they are most comfortable with. From telehealth sessions to virtual video sessions and in-person appointments, the range of available options will continue.
