Your mental health partner in the community

Community strength comes from collaboration and partnerships. At Some Other Solutions, we work hard to be more than a counselling service and crisis line. We are a community partner in providing mental health and wellness support for individuals, families, and small businesses.

As a partner, we are increasing our presence in the community. We are hosting mindfulness groups for children and youth through schools. We are hosting virtual mindfulness sessions in Anzac. And we are working closely with local Indigenous wellness and prevention teams to continue to find ways to support both urgent and long-term needs.

I also want to thank the many community groups that have reached out in the last couple of months to partner with us through fundraisers. The commitment of local businesses to support local services is so inspiring and just one of the reasons we are proud to be part of Wood Buffalo.

Continuing the conversation about youth mental health

Supporting young people with online learning

We are hearing more about challenges our young people are facing when it comes to staying focused and on task in the online learning environment. For many students in Grades 7-12, they have been in and out of isolation due to positive case exposure and it’s becoming extremely draining and frustrating.

The SOS team is available to support young people through these difficult times and Alberta Health Services has also put together some guidance and information around self-care and support for children and youth during COVID.

Some Other Solutions has started providing mindfulness group classes in schools around Fort McMurray.

Once you discover you can control your body through mindfulness, you can move into a state of awareness and positivity anytime. When we pause and take a few moments before reacting we usually feel and do better. Mindfulness is an exercise for our brain that helps us cope with stress.

Here are a few benefits of practicing mindfulness:

• Helps us focus

• Teaches us to stay calm in a stressful time

• Promotes happiness

• Improves patience

• Improves our attention
