Mental health support at work: a priority

A recent study shows that 75 per cent of Canadians believe their employers should make it a priority to address mental health problems at work. On the flip side, fewer than 40 per cent of small-to-mid-sized companies actually offer these types of services to their employees.

While many in our community have been working in the field the entire pandemic, many others have been bouncing back and forth between working from home, back to the office, back to home and now to one of various versions of a hybrid work model.

To set your employees up for success, there needs to be mental health support provided through these transitions. What does that look like?

Wellness programs. Clear expectations on flexibility. Communication around counselling and benefits access.

All of this contributes to the success of your employees and in turn, the success of your company.

"I Dance When I Feel”: presented by Holy Trinity Dance Academy

One in three Canadians will be affected by a mental illness during their lifetime. That's more than 22-thousand in our community of Fort McMurray alone who are struggling with everyone from depression and anxiety disorder to eating disorders, addictive behaviours and more.

Our friends at Holy Trinity Dance Academy are putting on a performance dedicated to these individuals, called "I Dance When I Feel." Partial proceeds from the event will come to us at Some Other Solutions to provide even more support and resources for mental health and wellness in our community.

SOS Youth Empowerment Retreat

We mentioned it last month and we are excited to share more information about our NEW Youth Empowerment Retreat! Taking place at Camp Yogi - Anzac this summer, 12-15 year olds will gather together to rediscover connections, feel empowered and elevate their mental health.

Youth will stay in the cabins at Camp Yogi and transportation to and from will be provided. More details coming soon!

Trans Day of Visibility: supporting the gender journey

For a Transgender person, the social construct of the modern gender binary can feel overwhelming and limiting. Moving between and beyond, it has historically been more than challenging — it's proven to have been downright dangerous!

It has become more common, world wide, knowing that there are many more ways to express “gender” than just “male” and “female" thanks to the brave work of generations of Transgender people that came before us, and their allies.

Family counselling at SOS

Families fight about all manner of issues. It’s a normal part of being in a relationship. Finances, illness, infidelity, life transitions, job loss, blending of families are just a few of the areas that tend to lead to larger conflicts.
