Collaborating to support our communities

“We’re in the same storm, but we’re not in the same boat.”

It’s a quote that has resonated with me since early in the pandemic. We have all been impacted by COVID-19, no question, but everyone has a unique experience and story with how they have personally felt the weight of the global health crisis.

Our team has been working on increasing collaborations with other groups and communities to ensure that everyone has access to the support they need to weather the storm from whatever boat they find themselves in.

In particular, we are working closely with the Indigenous communities in our region, to offer virtual counselling services, share resources, and look at ways to provide workshops and presentations on areas such as bullying and grief and loss.

As we work on these partnerships, our team is also expanding our education and knowledge on Indigenous communities, with plans to participate in cultural appropriation training with the Fort McMurray 468 First Nation to ensure we are providing thoughtful and compassionate support.

With compassion, empathy and resources, Some Other Solutions can be a safe harbour from the storm for anyone who needs it and we encourage community members to reach out.

Take care,

Jason King
Executive Director

Supporting local seniors

We know there’s a significant impact from COVID-19 on the mental health of young people but there’s another population group that is struggling: seniors.

Seniors in our community are more anxious about getting the virus, or are increasingly depressed with the lack of physical connections with family and friends.

With an increase in counselling referrals to SOS from St. Aiden’s, we are working in partnership with them to provide additional resources, including a 3-part video series that covers Financial Wellness, Mental and Emotional Wellness and Health Relationships with Caregivers.

Anxiety impacts all ages.

Feelings of worry or fear are all components of anxiety, but it can often be dismissed as “that’s life.” Everyone has feelings of anxiety at different points in their life. But anxiety can also present itself as more of a debilitating condition in people of all ages.
