Showing up for mental health

Our commitment to you is that mental health and wellness in our community is our priority. We want to ensure people are seen and heard, and that we continue to smash away the stigma around having conversations about mental health. We want people to reach out and ask for help without worrying about how their family will feel or their employer will react.

Your mental health matters and we are here to make sure you get the support you need.

But just as we show up for you, this weekend, our community showed up. Dozens of women gathered on Saturday, May 13 for She Wins: a women’s celebration event. Over a delicious brunch from Earls, we talked about everything from mental health and wellness, to finding balance between work and home life and everything in between. The feeling of support and empowerment was palpable and we left feeling inspired and energized.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at this event and to all of the sponsors and contributors who helped make this women’s event such a resounding success.

Youth DBT Group starts May 24

We need to help young people understand their experiences and behaviours are valid. But they also need guidance to make positive changes to manage emotions and move forward. Together, they are Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). 

Some Other Solutions is pleased to be facilitating a 6-week group session with 13-16 year olds. This series will also include two additional sessions for parents to learn how to support their children. 

This is a skills group based on DBT principles. Topics and skills development will include:

1. Emotional Regulation

2. Distress Tolerance 

3. Mindfulness

4. Interpersonal Effectiveness 

Introducing the new SOS Board Chair

Trevor Salisbury is on a mission to spread awareness about the importance of mental health at work and in his new role at Some Other Solutions, he’s got the backing of an entire organization to support his efforts. 

After four years on the Board, Salisbury is stepping into the role of Board Chair for the non-profit organization that has been operating in Wood Buffalo since 1986. The Board is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction of the organization, establishing partnerships and educating the community about the importance of mental health. 

Expanding counselling treatment options

At SOS, we provide health and wellness support for close to 1,300 people each and every year. That covers everything from counselling services to grief and loss workshops and everything in between. And those numbers are expected to climb.

With the demands of mental health support increasing, we wanted to ensure that the types of treatment and care we can provide is expanding as well.

We have added a collection of new therapy techniques to our repertoire. From Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) to Play Therapy, Narrative Therapy and more - we are continuing to add expertise to our team to ensure you can get the support you need in the way that works for you.
