COVID-19: finding the positives

A year ago this week, the world shut down. Schools closed, playgrounds were taped off, museums shut down and our worlds were turned upside down. Many people lost their jobs. Others transitioned to working from home. As the World Health Organization declared the Coronavirus a global pandemic, lockdown became a familiar term.

There’s no question it has been a challenging year for individuals and families both right here at home and around the province and country. But there have also been positive moments and opportunities that we should all share and celebrate. Here are a few of our favourites!

  1. An increased spotlight on mental health. Mental health and wellness are part of the conversation — finally! According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, one in 10 Canadians said their mental health had worsened ‘a lot’ as a result of COVID-19. People are struggling with motivation, dealing with anxiety, depression and more. While that doesn’t sound promising, more and more people are also talking about mental health and how it impacts their daily life. There’s less stigma around “taking a mental health day” — it’s acknowledged and appreciated.

  2. The ability to pivot. If there’s one thing that has been constant in the last year, it’s change. You can see your family, you can’t see your family. Work from home, come to the office, nope, back to your house. As the COVID-19 numbers change, so do public health restrictions. It’s less than ideal — we are creatures of habit and routine. However, the ability to be flexible, to pivot and maneuver with elements that are outside of your control is a skill that many have developed and nurtured in the last year. And it’s a skill you can apply to many areas of your life going forward.

  3. The power of community. If you’re like us, you have spent many hours outside walking, running and just soaking in the fresh air in the last year. The exercise is great for your physical health and mental wellness, no question. But it’s the new connections and community energy that has really picked up. The friendly hellos as you pass people on trails. The neighbourhood driveway chats with a safe distance. This has all been important social interaction that has kept us going!

We want to hear from you! Share with us something positive that has happened in your life in the last year. Let us know in the comments below and keep the positive vibes flowing.
