May 3-7: Mental Health Week

Mental health. Two simple words we are hearing a lot about these days, but together they are complex.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being, affecting how we think, feel and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Important at every stage of our lives, mental health can impact our lives in many ways. The more we can nurture mental health — think self-care — the more resilience we can build. And resilience is what helps us move through life’s challenges.

It is Mental Health Week in Canada — a perfect opportunity to raise awareness and draw more attention to the importance of mental health in our community and how we can work together to find a way forward through challenging times.

Anyone can have a bad day, but it doesn’t mean it’s a bad life.

How we respond to it and take care of our mental health is what’s important.

The mind and the body are connected. Many mental ailments cause stress, which lowers the immune system. This means more frequent sickness and inability to cope. It is important to talk about mental health, so others can also come forward about it. When we talk to each other, the problem becomes smaller with less hold over our lives. We can free each other by not being ashamed of mental health issues that we face throughout our lives.
